Appotronics released ALPD 5.0 laser display technology on 30th November. The new ALPD technology has improved a lot based on the previous version. In this guide, we will introduce the new ALPD 5.0 version and compare it with previous versions, including ALPD 5.0, ALPD 4.0, and ALPD 3.0.
ALPD technology stands for Advanced Laser Phosphor Display. It refers to patented fluorescent laser technology and can be used for image display based on laser-excited fluorescent materials and mixed multi-color laser lines.
The new ALPD 5.0 technology is a new ALPD technique released by Appotronics in November 2022. The ALPD 5.0 laser display technology features no speckle, low cost, high light efficiency, compact size, and a high color gamut that can achieve the maximum color gamut visible to the human eye. Appotronics will introduce two platforms, including the Pro and Lite versions.
It has improved a lot based on the previous ALPD version and is expected to be adopted in new projectors in 2023.
By matching the software algorithm with the light source control, ALPD 5.0 laser display technology has significantly increased the color gamut to 120% Rec.2020, 165% DCI-P3, and 210% Rec.709, meeting the color gamut requirements of the 4K standard and achieving the largest color gamut visible to the human eye, while maintaining the original ALPD technology advantages of no scattering and low cost.
In the past, laser display products that reach the color gamut of Rec.2020 have high cost and high power consumption, which is difficult to popularize and promote to ordinary consumers. In addition, the traditional RGB three-color laser has a speckle problem that is difficult to solve, which further affects the terminal experience. The adoption of ALPD 5.0 can solve these problems well.
For the application to projectors, the new laser technology will be coupled with DLP display technology in smart projectors. Nowadays, many smart home projectors have used ALPD 4.0 technology. For example, VAVA Chroma, Formovie Theater.
The ALPD technology has the following four advantages.
The overall light efficiency of the ALPD projector is much higher than common projectors with other light sources. Therefore, the new technology is better for environmental protection and energy saving.
The high light efficiency of ALPD technology brings high brightness. With the new ALPD technology, the brightness is up to 60, 000 lumens, which is leading in the world.
The ALPD technology gathers the advantages of Phosphor and laser. Its color performance reaches the DCI cinema-level standard.
The ALPD 4.0 projectors have a high contrast of 2,500:1, which can reach the cinema standard. See the image differences between for Xenon lamp projector and the laser projector.
The ALPD technology has high reliability, which has gone through the aging test, dustproof test (verified to be IP5X dustproof rating), heat dissipation test, structural strength test, high temperature, and high humidity, and other experimental tests.
Appotronics keeps improving the ALPD laser technology and has developed several versions in the past years starting from ALPD 1.0. The ALPD 5.0 technology is the latest ALPD technique released in 2021.
Compared with previous versions, the new version ALPD 5.0 features no speckle and has a larger color gamut, higher light efficiency, better brightness, and small size.
The color gamut describes the color range it can reproduce in a color spectrum or color space.
It can be divided into three classes for common color gamut standards, including Rec.709, DCI-P3, and Rec. 2020. You can compare the 3 color gamut standards via the illustration below.
Rec.709 is applicable to most displays and represents the standard color gamut in our general perception.
DCI-P3 is also known as the Hollywood color gamut, which is applied to digital cinema technology, the higher the value (high percentage of color range) means the more accurate it is to render the true colors needed for movie images.
Rec.2020 is proposed for Ultra HD TVs, covering image parameters such as resolution, frame rate, bit depth, and color gamut definition, which helps to restore the real world through the three primary color systems and is considered the color gamut standard for 4K digital displays.

The new ALPD 5.0 technology has improved the color gamut (the max color gamut that can be seen by human eyes), brightness, and compactness. That is to say, the projectors with ALPD 5.0 tend to have smaller sizes. We can see new projectors carrying ALPD 5.0 technology in 2023.
